Nativa Single Vineyard Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 14 % alcohol about $20
Let’s start by quoting the marketing materials. “Description: Free sulphur: 6 mg/L. Tasting Note: … Quite deep ruby in color with a very pronounced Cabernet Sauvignon nose of cassis, eucalypt, olive, dusty earth, clove, orange zest, and graphite. The palate is dry and full, with lots of acid and tannin structure and great intensity. Flavors of eucalypt, spice, coffee, graphite, minerals, raspberry, olive, and the garrigue. Very long and complex with potential to develop for many years in bottle. Just completely eats up the 100% new oak and is a true reflection of the Maipo Alto terroir. Score – 92. (Rhys Pender, Master of Wine, at his website, December 10, 2010)” And now for my review.
At the first sips this wine was very long, offering cassis and light acidity. The meal started with home barbecued chicken wings marinated in commercially prepared duck sauce enhanced with ground chilies. This wine did a great job of cutting the grease. The main dish was a home barbecued rib eye steak marinated in ketchup, ginger, and fresh garlic. The Cab was dark and round with balanced acidity, tasting of cassis and chocolate. The side dish of roasted eggplant brimming with garlic rendered this libation sweet. Fruit juice candy dessert took away its wine’s fruit but the wine offered good acidity.

Cantina Gabriele Dolcemente Cabernet Sauvignon & Cesanese Kosher 2009 12 % alcohol about $8
Let’s start by quoting the marketing materials. “Tasting Note: A blend of international superstar Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) and the Lazio region’s local grape variety Cesanese (30%). The aromas are rich with plum, cherry jelly, and spices. There’s a touch of charming sweetness here but the wine is well-balanced and fresh tasting with juicy red and black cherry flavors leading to a medium length finish. (VINTAGES panel, Feb. 2011)” And now for my review.
At the first sips this wine was plummy but too sweet. It didn’t have much acidity. The meal started with home barbecued chicken wings marinated in commercially prepared duck sauce enhanced with ground chilies. Now the taste of chocolate was added to the mix. The main dish was a home barbecued rib eye steak marinated in ketchup, ginger, and fresh garlic. The blend’s sweetness was dominant; the taste of black cherries tried to break through. The side dish of roasted eggplant brimming with garlic added acidity to the libation. Fruit juice candy dessert muted the wine’s sweetness but the two were not a good match.

Alain Jaume Grande Garrigue Vacqueyras AOC 2009 15 % alcohol about $20
Let’s start by quoting the marketing materials. “Tasting Note: The 2009 Alain Jaume Vacqueyras Grande Garrigue is much more backward, displaying a denser blue/purple color, thicker, richer blue and black fruits, and hints of kirsch, lavender, and garrigue. Still grapy and unformed, but loaded with potential given its depth of concentration and richness, it will benefit from another 2-3 months of bottle age, and keep for 5-8 years. Score - 91. (Robert Parker Jr., at his website, Aug. 2010).” And now for my review.
At the first sips this wine was mouth filling and long. The meal started with Japanese Wasabi crackers that increased its intensity. The centerpiece was a cheeseless meat lasagna made with spinach noodles. In response the wine had great length and offered dark fruits. But its acidity should have been rounder. The fruit juice candy dessert rounded the wine’s acidity but muted its fruit.

It's dry, light bodied and refreshing with apple and pear flavors leading to a medium-length finish. Terrific as a summer sipper or enjoy with grilled chicken breast, summer salads or light fish dishes. (VINTAGES panel, Feb. 2011). “ And now for my review.
I was unhappy when the cork started to crumble as I opened the bottle. At the first sips this wine was somewhat sour and musky. Japanese Wasabi crackers rounded the Pinot Grigio. The first meal was barbecued chicken with lots of paprika on the skin. The wine was metallic and tasted of burnt sugar without being sweet. Its acidity was refreshing. Zesty guacamole weakened this wine. The fruit juice candy dessert made me taste something burnt in the liquid.

Dominique Piron Les Pierres Morgon 2009 13 % alcohol about $18
Let’s start by quoting the marketing materials. “Tasting Note: From a 7 year old foudre crafted, Piron reports, 'by a local character, who is unfortunately getting ready to retire,' the 2009 Morgon Cote de Py Cuvee les Pierres - originating in a pebbly yet clay-rich section just uphill from Javernieres - displays both smoked meat and machine oil overlays to its rich black raspberry. A glorious and haunting floral dimension of buddleia gains prominence over time and wells-up from the empty glass. A snappy suggestion of candied tangerine rind as well as invigoratingly tart notes of berry skin and stony impingements all augment an otherwise soothing and luxuriantly mouth-coating fruit matrix, leading to a finish of strikingly vibratory intensity. This should be worth following steadily for 6-8 years. Score - (92-93+). (David Schildknecht, at the Robert Parker website, Aug. 2010).“ And now for my review.
At the first sips this wine was very long with dark raspberries and and tinge of sweetness. I started with Japanese rice crackers that made the tangerines come out. When paired with honey-garlic barbecued chicken wings its acidity was sharp and the wine was multilayered. A rather dry barbecued chicken breast with a paprika-dusted skin gave the liquid the taste of dark cherries and dark chocolate. In the face of the chicken’s moister leg, the chocolate taste intensified. With one of my old favorites, potatoes roasted in chicken fat, the wine tasted of dark cherries but it was salty. Veggies were green beans in tomato sauce, and the Morgon was dark and long. But the objectionable salt did not go away.

Let’s start by quoting the marketing materials. “Tasting Note: Medium to deep ruby color; cherry aromas with notes of espresso; dry, medium bodied with juicy cherry flavors, firm structure, and medium tannins on the finish. Serving Suggestion: Beef stroganov, roast beef, or a meaty lasagna.“ And now for my review.
At the first sips this wine was mouth puckering and fruity, but short. I started with Japanese rice crackers that cut the acidity. The initial meal centered on barbecued beef ribs. The wine responded with black cherries, light tannins, and crisp acidity. The side dish was one of my favorites, potatoes roasted in chicken fat. The libation’s flavors intensified and I enjoyed its mouth-cleansing acidity. But a spicy tomato-based salsa gutted the wine.

Sauvignon Blanc And Moscatel
Wine Reviewed
Ness Blanco Ribera del Jucar DO 2009 13 % alcohol about $13
Let’s start by quoting the marketing materials. “Description: A blend of 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Moscatel. Tasting Note: Golden straw in color, medium-bodied, showing aromas and flavors of summer and tropical fruits along with grassy and mineral hints. Lively and refreshing. Drink now. Score – 85 (Daniel Rogov at the wineloverspage website, January 29, 2011).“ And now for my review.
At the first sips this wine was long with tropical fruit and feathery. I started with Japanese rice crackers that intensified the wine and rendered it oily. The initial meal centered on a stovetop chicken leg cooked in mushrooms, onions, and spicy salsa. The wine responded with citrus and mouth-filling acidity. It was metallic. When paired with organic whole-wheat pasta this Spaniard offered refreshing acidity and citrus. Fresh cherries made it long and nicely acidic.

Mezzomondo Pinot Grigio Chardonnay IGT 2010 13 % alcohol about $10
Let’s start by quoting the marketing materials. “Tasting Note: Clear pale straw with subtle green highlights; melon, light citrus and soft mineral aromas; dry, medium body; crisp citrus flavors with a mineral note lasting on a medium finish. Serving Suggestion: Drink now with seafood, poultry, and baked fish.“ And now for my review.
At the first sips this wine offered light acidity and was short. I started with Japanese rice crackers that rendered it round and sweet. The initial meal centered on a stovetop chicken leg cooked in mushrooms, onions, and spicy salsa. The wine responded with increased acidity and some melon. The accompanying organic whole-wheat pasta seemed to make its fruit more expressive. When paired with fresh cherries this liquid was refreshingly acidic.

A Cellared In Canada Rosé:
Grapes from an undisclosed location...
Jackson Triggs Unity Rosé
Wine Reviewed Jackson Triggs Unity Rosé 11.5 % alcohol about $9
Let’s start by quoting the marketing materials. “Tasting Note: Medium pink color; candied strawberry-cherry aromas; medium sweet, with sweet fruit flavors, with soft acidity. Serving Suggestion: A good summer refresher, or serve with crepes.“ And now for my review.
At the first sips this wine was round and sweet with a tinge of bubble gum. It had pleasant acidity. I started with Japanese rice crackers that added strawberries to the mix. The initial meal centered on a barbecued chicken leg. In response the wine picked up a metallic taste. The side dish was Basmati rice cooked with brown lentils. Now this liquid’s strawberry taste intensified and I noted some citrus.
