Wine Reviewed
Cantina Gabriele Dolcemente Cabernet Sauvignon & Cesanese Kosher 2009 12 % alcohol about $8
Let’s start by quoting the marketing materials. “Tasting Note: A blend of international superstar Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) and the Lazio region’s local grape variety Cesanese (30%). The aromas are rich with plum, cherry jelly, and spices. There’s a touch of charming sweetness here but the wine is well-balanced and fresh tasting with juicy red and black cherry flavors leading to a medium length finish. (VINTAGES panel, Feb. 2011)” And now for my review.
At the first sips this wine was plummy but too sweet. It didn’t have much acidity. The meal started with home barbecued chicken wings marinated in commercially prepared duck sauce enhanced with ground chilies. Now the taste of chocolate was added to the mix. The main dish was a home barbecued rib eye steak marinated in ketchup, ginger, and fresh garlic. The blend’s sweetness was dominant; the taste of black cherries tried to break through. The side dish of roasted eggplant brimming with garlic added acidity to the libation. Fruit juice candy dessert muted the wine’s sweetness but the two were not a good match.
